Heatwaves Don't Last Forever. Jewellery Does.

When temperatures rise, most of us adjust our daily routines. We drink more water, seek out shade, and perhaps slow down a little. But have you ever noticed that your jewellery can feel different during a heatwave too?

As a jeweller, one of the most common things I hear during periods of hot weather is, "My rings suddenly feel tighter than usual."

The good news is that your rings probably haven't changed size at all.

Warm weather can cause our fingers and hands to swell slightly, making rings feel noticeably tighter even when they fit perfectly throughout the rest of the year.

Why Do Rings Feel Tight in Hot Weather?

When temperatures increase, our bodies work harder to regulate heat. Blood vessels expand and fluid retention can increase, causing mild swelling in the hands and fingers.

For ring wearers, this can mean:

• Rings feel tighter than normal
• Rings are more difficult to remove
• Fingers may feel swollen by the end of the day
• Ring sizing can seem inconsistent

This is completely normal and usually resolves once temperatures return to normal.

Avoid Measuring Your Ring Size During a Heatwave

If you're considering ordering a new ring, it's worth waiting until temperatures are cooler before measuring your finger size.

Professional jewellers generally recommend measuring fingers when they are at a comfortable, average temperature rather than during periods of extreme heat or cold.

Ring sizing is most accurate when your hands are at their normal size, not during temperature extremes.

If you're between sizes during a heatwave, it may be wise to wait a few days before making a final decision.

Jewellery That's Comfortable Whatever the Weather

While rings can sometimes feel restrictive during warmer weather, other jewellery pieces remain effortlessly comfortable all year round.

Stud earrings are a perfect example. Lightweight and secure, they don't shift with temperature changes and can be worn from morning to evening with ease.

Simple silver designs, such as hammered circle studs, offer an understated look that works just as well with summer dresses as they do with cosy winter knitwear.

Necklaces can also be a comfortable choice during warmer months, particularly lighter-weight designs that sit comfortably against the skin.

Looking After Yourself During a Heatwave

The recent hot weather has been challenging for many people, including small business owners and makers.

My own workshop has felt more like a greenhouse than a studio on some days, making silversmithing difficult during the hottest afternoons.

Sometimes the best thing we can do is slow down.

Not every productive day needs to be a busy day. Rest, hydration, and a little shade are productive too.

Whether you're spending time in the garden, heading to the coast, or simply trying to stay cool at home, remember to drink plenty of water and listen to what your body needs.

The heatwave will pass. Your jewellery, and the memories attached to it, will remain long afterwards.
