Environmental Sustainability Report 2025

Introduction

Impressums Jewellery is an independent UK-based jewellery studio founded by Lauren, a self-taught silversmith. What began as a creative outlet has grown into a business built on craftsmanship, authenticity, and respect for nature.

Each piece is designed and handmade by Lauren in her workshop, using time-honoured silversmithing techniques. The business is rooted in sustainability from the materials used to the packaging choices with a simple guiding principle: to create meaningful jewellery that treads lightly on the planet.

Every piece I make should have purpose - not just in its beauty, but in the way it's made.

Materials

  • Impressums Jewellery primarily uses recycled silver wherever possible to reduce environmental impact.
  • Recycled silver is used for pendants, charms, and earrings, giving new life to precious metal without the need for additional mining.
  • Sterling silver components are chosen from trusted UK suppliers that offer recycled or responsibly sourced metal.
  • The Strandline Collection incorporates sea glass gathered along the British coast. Each piece is collected ethically, without disturbing natural habitats - often during beach cleaning on holidays. Because sea glass is technically discarded waste, collecting it not only inspires new creations but also helps to clean up coastal environments.
  • Every scrap of silver in the studio is saved, melted down, and reused in future pieces. Waste lemel and silver dust are carefully collected and sent to be refined. This circular approach reduces both waste and reliance on newly mined materials.

Production Practices

  • All jewellery is handmade in small batches or made to order, ensuring minimal waste and efficient material use.
  • Energy-efficient production, using compact kilns and tools suited to small-scale jewellery work.
  • Minimal chemical use, opting for safer pickling and polishing compounds wherever possible.
  • Responsible waste handling, with all silver filings, dust, and offcuts collected for refining or reuse.
  • Chemical waste is collected and discarded responsibly, in accordance with environmental best practice.
  • Timed electrical tools and heating to ensure nothing is left on unnecessarily.
  • Reusable wipes and towels for cleaning and drying, helping to minimise disposable waste.
  • LED lighting and improved insulation in the workshop to reduce energy use and improve efficiency.
  • Each piece undergoes careful hand-finishing and polishing, reflecting both skill and respect for the craft - no mass production, no shortcuts.

Packaging & Shipping

  • Gift boxes are made from eco-friendly materials, including FSC-certified cardboard and recycled polyurethane foam.
  • Branded packaging is minimal, elegant, and designed to be reused or easily recycled.
  • Orders are shipped using plastic-free packaging, with recyclable tissue paper and paper tape wherever possible.
  • Customers are encouraged to reuse their gift boxes or recycle packaging responsibly.
  • All orders are shipped via Royal Mail, recognised as the UK's greenest delivery option for letters and parcels.

Responsible Sourcing & Suppliers

  • Recycled and responsibly sourced sterling silver is purchased from established UK jewellery suppliers who align with environmental standards.
  • Findings and chains are chosen for durability and traceability, ensuring long-lasting pieces.
  • As a member of the Guild of Jewellery Designers, Lauren maintains professional standards of quality and ethical practice.
  • Impressums Jewellery was featured by Small Business Saturday UK, recognising its commitment to local, sustainable, small-scale craftsmanship.
  • Lauren has completed the Small Business Britain Green Growth Programme, ensuring that sustainability remains central as the business grows.

Waste Reduction & Recycling

  • Silver offcuts and dust are collected and refined into new pieces.
  • Paper, packaging, and studio waste are sorted and recycled wherever possible.
  • Reusable cloths, tools, and containers are used instead of single-use items.
  • This closed-loop mindset ensures that environmental responsibility extends through every stage of production, from raw material to finished piece.

Community & Education

  • Lauren regularly shares insights into her creative process from collecting natural materials to cast and helping customers understand the craftsmanship and sustainability behind each piece.
  • She also uses social platforms to educate customers about the environmental benefits of small-scale production compared to mass manufacturing, encouraging mindful consumption.
  • Additionally, one tree is funded and planted for every order placed via the Impressums Jewellery website, through partnership with ECOLOGI, contributing to global reforestation and carbon reduction.
  • By keeping production small, transparent, and local, Impressums Jewellery encourages thoughtful purchasing - jewellery that's made to last and cherished for years.

Future Goals

Sustainability is a continual process, not a finished task. Future goals include

  •  transitioning to renewable or green energy sources for the workshop
  • developing a jewellery recycling initiative to repurpose old or damaged silver pieces
  • tracking and offsetting carbon emissions from packaging and shipping
  • moving to green web hosting to reduce the digital carbon footprint.

Conclusion

Impressums Jewellery is built on care-  for the materials, the craft, and the environment.

By choosing recycled metals, ethical suppliers, and eco-friendly packaging, Lauren ensures each piece embodies the values of sustainability, craftsmanship, and integrity.

Sustainability isn't about perfection; it's about making conscious choices at every step. My jewellery carries that intention - beauty with purpose.
